One of my babies came to me formula fed and on a schedule. As a mom of twin daughters, I started the journey breastfeeding one, while the other was whisked away to the NICU and given formula immediately. I didn’t see her for a day and a half, didn’t know what was going on. My husband told her they were feeding her formula. I didn’t get any skin-to-skin and they never asked me about feeding her. So much of my anxiety pre-motherhood was about being able to deliver healthy babies. I remember reading that doctors would ask me if they...

I had great intentions of breastfeeding. Our son was born and I didn’t know what to expect as a new mom. I didn’t have any colostrum but I tried to breastfeed him as much as I could. I tried SNS [Supplemental Nursing System] but at one month he wasn’t gaining enough weight. He also had reflux. By week six, doctors recommended we see a gastro specialist. They weighed him after feeding and decided it would be best I supplement with formula to give him the extra calories he needed. I created low-fat milk for him, my supply was good. I...

When you’re pregnant, there is this comfort that your babies are safe and getting everything they need inside. Then you deliver and it’s like, 'Oh my gosh, I need to figure out what they want, what they need, how do I keep them safe?' I took a breastfeeding for twins class, so my intention was to breastfeed as much as I could. I set a three-month goal. My milk didn’t come in immediately and we used some donor milk at the hospital. I was on prescription meds after having a C-section, everything was hazy and foggy, but we kept trying...

My daughter was born via emergency C-section. It took my body a few days to catch on that she had arrived but we soon successfully began our breastfeeding journey, although not without help - from an SNS feeding tube, nipple shield, lactation consultant, and my partner. For over four months my daughter and I continued on this journey during my maternity leave, until the realities of managing a pumping schedule alongside a demanding job came fully into view. The guilt of introducing formula turned into relief, as my mad-dashes between meetings to the mothers' room at work happened less and...
