I didn’t give breastfeeding much thought, I took a class but was definitely more preoccupied with birth. My first experience of nursing my eldest was great. She latched on immediately, golden milk came, everything was fabulous. As soon as I got home, all hell broke loose. I had bleeding nipples and was taking Tylenol with Codeine because I was in so much pain, it was worse than childbirth. I dedicated my life completely for about four months trying to nurse, and really it stole the joy out of early motherhood for me. I remember buying formula and it haunting me...

I supplemented my little one and struggled with the guilt almost every day. In hindsight, it was not worth beating myself up. I had a hard time producing breast milk. I did everything I could; ate all the right things, drank the right things, but I just couldn’t produce enough. I felt crushed and like I was alone. For me, the epiphany was finding out my son was in the 2nd percentile and realizing I couldn’t do it on my own after three weeks. I didn’t know what I was producing or wasn’t. I met with lactation consultants and had...

I was actually doing really well with breastfeeding so to have to stop for my own health was maybe more damaging to my psyche.I was in labor for 41 hours and pushed for six. Finally, the call was made to perform an assisted forceps delivery. By the last push, I was given an episiotomy which my daughter's shoulder got caught on and caused a third-degree perineum tear. I lost a ton of blood and, honestly, almost didn’t survive. Once we got home, something still didn’t feel right. I was rushed back to the hospital to find I had an internal...

I didn’t fully appreciate how hard pumping and going back to work would be. I started out only breastfeeding my son while I was on maternity leave and pumping to build up a supply of frozen milk for my return to work. I was having some problems, including overproduction and mastitis, so I really cut down on the pumping to try to correct the imbalance. I tried giving my son bottles of breast milk prior to going back to work but it was a struggle and he would never take the bottle -- plenty of milk was wasted trying. When...

Not being able to exclusively breastfeed came as a surprise to me. I was shocked and disappointed to have to change my plan. I supplemented with formula almost from the start when my daughter wasn't eating enough, starting in the hospital. She lost more than the usual amount of weight after birth, so we had to do weight checks for the first couple of weeks. After I had been home for two nights, she was just screaming and not eating very much. We still weren’t aware her screams were food related. We called into the advice nurse line that our...
